Changes to the conditions for the “10 in 100” competition have abandoned the original combined element of the matches and there are now separate men’s and women’s team competitions.
The top teams in each competition go into the main final with the top “Non British League” teams going into the “Plate Final” but they possibly could be included in the main final as some places are decided on a paper match to produce the eight teams for the final.
With four of the seven competing teams in the Semi-final at Kingston, being British League teams it was expected that they would dominate the teams results but it was not so.
Crawley who are in Division two of the British League comfortably took the honours in the men’s match scoring 87 points to non league Brighton & Hove’s 76 with Southampton (BAL) and Kingston Poly sharing third place both on 63 points.
Southampton came out on top in the women’s match with 93 points to Brighton & Hove’s 78 with Aldershot (BAL) scoring 34 points in third place and Crawley in fourth spot with 30.
Probably due to the inexplicable decision to hold the finals in September on the same day as the last round of the Southern Women’s League the women’s events on Saturday were not that well supported.
It will not be known for a day or two precisely has qualified for the various finals but the likely hood is that Crawley men will be in the “Cup” final and the Brighton & Hove teams will both be in the “Plate” finals.
There could be much to be said for a return to combined teams as both the National Young Athletes and National Junior Leagues operate successfully along those lines and thus encourage greater camaraderie.
There were six Sussex winners with Crawley’s Luke Sargeant clocking 22.76s in the 200 metres, Chris Minn winning the high hurdles in 16.22s and Neil Mansbridge taking the javelin throw with 50.64m while Brighton & Hove’s David Ingram soared over 4.20m to win the pole vault and Tom French took the triple jump with 13.93m
In the women’s event, although there were many second places, only Crawley’s Stephanie Smith came out on top winning the pole vault by clearing 3.50m.
Morton, Ketley and Dotczek in contention at Copthall.
On the first day of the South of England Combined Events championships at Copthall Horsham’s Helen Morton in the senior women, Eastbourne’s Jono Ketley in the U17 and Crawley’s Jasmine Dotczek in the U20 event are all lying in second place.
