Sebastian Rodger has won a bronze medal as a member of the British Junior 4 x 400-metre relay team at the World Championships at Moncton in Canada.
In the heats he had a split of 47.04 when taken his team up to second place on the second leg when the team won the event in the then fastest time in the World this year.
The America’s ran faster a few moments later but there was another fine run for the Crawley all rounder in the final although the British team finished up in a splendid third place.
A Clutch of medals for Sussex at Copthall.
Sussex Combined eventers collected a clutch of medals at the South of England combined Events championships at Copthall at the weekend.
Pride of place must go to the gold medal winning performance at East Grinstead’s Ryan Spivey in the U15 boy’s pentathlon competition.
Ironically it was fellow Sussex performer Michael Papanicola who went into the final discipline, in second place, ahead of Spivey but the East Grinstead’s powerful 800 metres always allows him to climb several places.
It was such a case at Copthall when after clocking 12.44s for the 80m hurdles, he is the Sussex and Sussex Schools champion, and followed this with a 9.70m shot putt, a 5.10m long jump and a 1.61m high jump he was still out of medal contention.
A sparkling 2m 14.37s however saw him overall all the athletes above him to win the title with 2,535 points.
Competing in just his third pentathlon Papanicola after a Pb of12.33s. another Pb of 11.08 and yet another Pb of 5.40m was a little below his best of 1.72m clearing just 1.61m in the high jump and this certainly robbed him of the gold medal. Although he recorded another Pb in the 800m in 2:28.35s he managed to overhaul the competition leader but overtaken himself and had to settle for a never less fine bronze medal with 2,497 points, just 38 points behind Spivey’s winning total.
Horsham Blue Star’s Helen Morton took the silver medal in the senior Heptathlon with 4,627 points after clocking 15.15s for the hurdles, high jumping 1.63m, putting the shot 9.35m and clocking 26.61s for 200 metres on the first day before long jump 5.00m in the long jump, throwing the javelin 33.98m clocking 2:30.14s.
There was another silver medal for Eastbourne’s Jono Ketley in the U17 Octathlon with 4,667 points. Along jump of 6.02m a Pb in the hurdles of 14.8s, another Pb of 42.89m in the javelin throw and a clocking of 51.30s for the 400 metres.
On Day two Ketley leapt 1.70m in the high jump, putt the shot 9.91m, threw the discus 29.25m and clocked 4:23.30 for the 1,500m.
Crawley’s Surrey athlete Jasmine Dotczek also collected a silver medal in the U20 Heptathlon with 4,661 points while in the same age group Elise Lovell retired after injuring her ankle in the long jump.
Chichester’s Isobel Brown, despite no heighting in her number one event, the high jump, which ruled out any chance she had of taking a medal honourably returned for day two and eventually finished fifth with 2.993 points in the U17 Heptathlon.
There was another silver for Sussex in the U15 Girls when Grace Baker from Hastings made her debut at this distance.
Baker clocked 10:28.41s the fourth fastest time by a Sussex women’s this season.
